Four years after the slick viral ‘Kony2012’ video that took social media by storm, A Brilliant Genocide seeks to unravel the part of the story that ‘Kony2012’ left untold. The story of the socio-political situation that existed in Uganda that gave rise to the Kony militia. The documentary opens by telling us that there are two sides to the story of Kony; this is not a vindication of the warlord, but an examination of the multitude of events and perspectives that gave rise to his power. We understand the historical climate that gives rise to the vast gulfs in wealth and privilege between North and South Uganda. We learn the name of the man on the other side of the divide, Yoweri Museveni, the president of Uganda that after ousting the infamous Idi Amin has remained in power for almost 30 years. A Brilliant Genocide is the journalistic, fact-filled antidote to ‘Kony2012’. Where the Kony campaign provoked reactionary social media outrage, this film provokes a deeper feeling: the sadness and despair of the tragic complexities of a beautiful country that, after so many years, deserves peace.
