‘A Matter of Time’ is a documentary film about Kathryn Calder’s music career and experiences of caring for a parent. During some her most successful years in music with ‘The New Pornographers’ and ‘Immaculate Machine’, Kathryn was caught up in chaos as her mother was diagnosed with the crippling illness called ALS. Trying to juggle two bands, touring and taking time to visit her mother, Kathryn knew that something had to give. Her mother Lynn had always supported her and was immensely proud of her music. The two of them shared an unbreakable bond and a love of music that had made so many treasured memories. The house that had first nurtured Kathryn’s music now housed her dying mother and Kathryn returned to care for her. During that time, Kathryn used music to confront her despair and made an album that would accompany her mother to her end. This documentary brings awareness about ALS and its debilitating effects. It is a celebration of how humans can overcome immense grief and how music can move, mend and unite us in the worst of times. It is a testimony to Kathryn’s mother and a wonderful story about life and loss.
