Writer Stephen Elliott’s memoir ‘The Adderall Diaries’ was optioned and produced by James Franco, making its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year. In After Adderall, Stephen Elliott tracks the strange process of having his life and work made into a film and the core-shaking perspective shifts that come about from this process. Doubtful at first, but encouraged by his ebullient agent, Elliott soon finds that what may have seemed an initially exciting proposition turns into something more complicated as he is torn between caring about the film and the tedium of its production. The writer also finds himself caught between three planes of reality: his real life, his written memoir and the adaptation taking form, with the casts from all three worlds questioning his true identity. As a film based on the experience of making a film about a book based on his life, Stephen Elliott has a seemingly infinite amount of absurd material at his disposal and uses it to great effect. After Adderall manages to make sense of that senseless sensation when the creative process and life collide.
