The frustration at the lack of progress in the construction of his house has finally gotten the best of Bekim, and he decides to move to Amsterdam to earn the money he needs to complete his dream home. As an illegal immigrant, all opportunities are closed to him, apart from the chance to work for Van Doom, the Albanian face to the Amsterdam criminal underworld. Bekim is torn between three women and the three lives they represent. Martha, his Albanian girlfriend, who he has left behind and who draws him back to his traditional life. Anna, the exploited prostitute he on his arrival to Amsterdam, his tie to the the city’s dark side. Suzanna, his link to a legitimate working life in Amsterdam. Beautifully shot and tightly edited the locations of Tirana and Amsterdam are used to superb effect. A familiar premise has new life breathed into it through rounded and believable characters that brought to life with some stellar performances, particularly James Biberi as the terrifyingly charismatic crime lord Van Doom. ‘Amsterdam Express’ is a film that will stay with you and is a perfect introduction to contemporary Albanian cinema.
