Catherine (Lolita Chammah), a young mother struggling with substance abuse, is determined to rekindle her relationship with her estranged daughter, Alba, who has been in the care of Catherine's strict and at times overbearing mother, Elisabeth (Isabelle Huppert), since she was two years old. Elisabeth is wary of allowing Catherine back into their lives but reluctantly allows Catherine to spend an afternoon with Alba.
Alba has her own doubts about her unruly mother as their personalities clash. It becomes clear that Catherine has no intention of taking her daughter back to be supervised by Elisabeth, so Alba tries to escape. In the resulting affray, Catherine’s beloved dog dies. This deeply affects Catherine, but the tragedy brings mother and daughter closer together as Alba begins to understand the difficulties that Catherine has experienced. But how will Catherine cope with the responsibilities of motherhood, and will she convince Alba that they can have a meaningful relationship?
Barrage is a sensitive story analysing the personalities through three generations of women, played in part by real life mother and daughter, Isabelle Huppert and Lolita Chammah. With minimal use of dialogue, a whimsical shooting style and an eclectic soundtrack this is an intriguing and touching, if slightly unsettling, character study.
