Seasoned documentary filmmaker Heidi Specogna turns her inquisitive and incisive eye onto the enduring trauma experienced by people in the Central African Republic. Cahier Africain (African Notebook) centres around the accounts of 300 or so people subjected to unspeakable violence at the hands of Congolese mercenaries during the 2008 conflict. These brave, terrible testimonies are gathered in a small notebook, intended to be used as evidence at the European Court of Human Rights; the book never reached its target. Cahier Africain is an important and necessary film, giving a voice to victims who would otherwise never find any form of justice. It’s made all the more relevant and painful in light of the more recent and ongoing civil war in the region, which is devastating lives in similar ways every day. Far from being all doom and gloom, however, Heidi Specogna offers rays of happiness and hope from her subjects’ stories. The film is beautifully shot and edited, making it totally absorbing, and took home the Swiss Film Prizes for Best Documentary and Best Editing earlier this year. Orestes Kouzof
