Francois Delisle has crafted his simple tale to perfection, shooting in black and white, no emphasis on names or place; the entire narrative having an uneasy, yet hard-hitting and timeless feel. The unique soundscape carries the audience with heightening the tensions that shapes the protagonists’ journeys. The contrast of a crime being confessed cut with the breaking of waves, as three lives crash apart. Yet In the end, it is music, the power of sound that sets them free – seeing a concert, getting lost in the crowds and atmosphere, escaping from their reality. Christophe and Irene are the epitome of despair and heartbreak; with the audience feeling every second of their tragic tale and paralleling their same lack of resolution as the credits draw to a close. Love, loss, pain and faith; this film is a multitude of emotions which will leave you exhausted and shocked yet appreciating the fragility of life and how easy its bubble can bust. Delisle's surreal piece of cinema will draw you in entirely, immerse you in a very real and sorrow filled world – yet deep at the core of their triangle of hurt, offer the audience a barely breathing life-support to the notion of hope.
