Following questioning of the Congo’s refuge for sexual violence survivors being called ‘City of Joy’, co-founder Eve Ensler explains “these women don’t have to be unhappy forever”. Recounting their incredibly horrific stories, broken it would be unsurprising if these women were irrecoverably broken. But instead, Madeline Gavin’s documentary shows them build a safe and happy community, protecting its occupants from the darkness outside, while shining a light from within. Around the City is a ravaged country, the residents are victims of the Congo’s brutal war. Similar to the female survivors, the Congo is repeatedly violated for the natural resources it contains. Repeated, this country and its occupants, the community and its individuals, the land and the body are interlinked. Rape becomes an extension of war, a vile tool designed to humiliated and eliminate societies by ruining their women. Despite enduring this harsh and cruel world, these women of the Congo do not surrender to it, but try and build a better one. Equal parts devastating and uplifting, horrifying and joyful, the City of Joy acts as deterrent against further sexual violence, providing education on both biology and self-defence. Alone and abused, many survivors had trouble moving on, but together in this City, they are determined to “live, live for others”. Bruno Savill De Jong
