ASMR YouTuber Mandy (Atsuko Okatsuka) opens Discreet by softly inviting her followers to join her in achieving “vibrational peace”. Yet the sounds in Travis Matthew’s surreal film are anything but tranquil. Sizzling bacon, roaring highways, moaning pornography, zipping plastic and a constantly knocking hand become concrete statements of unease. These noises permeate the film’s exploration of trauma, influence and observation. Following the roaming Alex (Jonny Mars) the plot unfurls dreamlike, witnessing his own recordings, and detached sexual activities, including an oddly clinical online hook-up. Lacking internal direction, Alex becomes passive observer, distantly watching all those around him. His restrained demeanour always seems ready to burst. Alex tends to decrepit John (Bob Swaffer), who towers over Alex with a massive white beard and twitching hand. Hinted to be his childhood abuser, while Alex will only observe, John can only do so. The trauma between the two goes unspoken and suppressed, yet lingers in ways neither can control. Much like Mars’ performance, just beneath Discreet’s simmering surface lays an intense experience. We are kept at a distance, glancing scenes from across the street or through car windows, unable to fully comprehend the plot, waiting for the sly filmmaking to suddenly explode. Bruno Savill De Jong
