A soldier returns home from the Civil War. After the horrors he has seen, all he longs for is his peace of mind. Yet, once he has been reunited with his family, he finds them embroiled in a bitter conflict with an abusive neighbouring cattle rancher. Not only does he have to fight against the rancher, he also has to battle his own family’s passivity and reluctance towards dealing with their abuser. The war has turned him into a man for whom inaction, even for a second, means imminent death, and so the divide seems as wide between him and his family as it is between the family and their rival. Director Kane Senes’ debut feature successfully plunges the viewer into the realm of the wild West and the spine-tingling tension that surrounds the movie. The characters are fittingly defiant, obstinate and closed-off, yet much of the beauty in ‘Echoes of War’ centres around fleeting moments of revelation that are wonderfully eloquent in revealing their innermost thoughts and conflicts.
