All a travelling musician wants to be is a mariachi, like his father, grandfather and great grandfather before him. But his life takes an unexpected turn when the people of the small Mexican town he travels to mistake him for a dangerous enemy assassin.

Breaking out of jail, the ruthless criminal Azul ventures off with a guitar case full of weapons and vows revenge on the local drug lord, Moco. When hitmen are sent to kill Azul, they are told to look for a man wearing black and carrying a guitar case - mistakenly picking up the innocent musician. Forced to trade his guitar for a gun, the mariachi plays for his life in this critically acclaimed film debut from director Robert Rodriquez. Originally a student film made for only $7,000, the film became a major success upon its first release and resulted in a write-up on the front page of Variety. EL MARIACHI is a wild bullet-dodging ride through a world of bandit violence, from shoot-outs to tragedy, and involving a passionate affair with the beautiful Dominó.

Following the film’s great success, Gallardo went on to be co-producer of the Robert Rodriguez-directed Mexico Trilogy sequels, DESPERADO (1995) and ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO (2003).
