Elvira raises her two beautiful children in Mexico City whilst her husband Gustavo works for an insurance firm. The pair live comfortably until Gustavo fails to return home after leaving to buy cigarettes. The reason for his disappearance is unknown, but Elvira soon establishes that ‘a woman never really gets to know her husband’. Abandoned with two children she secretly pursues the love of her life in the knowledge that he has most probably betrayed her for the love of a young man. The secrecy with which Elvira conducts this mission leads to a plethora of fabricated tell-tales and forgery. Those who surround her are baffled by her behaviour, but somehow Elvira discloses nothing. At times this serves to create fantastic moments of comedy in what is essentially a tragic story. The entire cast deliver impeccable performances, however, Cecilia Suarez as Elvira is utterly captivating throughout. The film is aesthetically beautiful and firmly roots you within this intimate community in Mexico. With hints of Jean Pierre Jeunet’s ‘Amelie’, Manolo Caro’s Elvira is equally as entertaining, heart wrenching and honest. It is as humorous as it is bitter which will leave you both entertained and thoroughly moved.
