Sophie thinks her husband Ben is clinical and pragmatic because he was abandoned as a baby. The birth of his own child, Grace, causes him to question his identity, and so begins his search for his biological parents. What should be a deeply personal journey is flipped upside down as Ben invites a documentary film crew to follow him on his mission to find his family, recording every high, low and farcical twist. A parodic take on the success stories of filmed and televised adoption quests, For Grace deconstructs and defies all audience expectations of this frequently-traversed genre. Accomplished actor Sebastian Armesto skilfully echoes the tropes of documentary-making in his debut directorial feature to put a comic spin on this often harrowing subject. The comedy of the film is created in a flawless collaboration between writer Andrew Keatley and a cast whose largely improvised comedic wit and sharp dialogue will simultaneously embarrass and amuse you. With moments that are so convincingly awkward that you’ll be second-guessing whether this is a documentary or mockumentary, this group of quirky characters will leave you thankful that you’re not part of their family.
