“Hijras are born neither men nor women. We are somewhere in the middle.” Hijras are the men whose true identity is to live their life as women. They have been mentioned in traditional Sanskrit texts for hundreds of years. Lakshmi Ma is one of them, and she has become a spiritual guide, a guru to seven others, her ‘daughters’. Together, they form a strong family, and they help one another through daily life. Living their identity has meant leaving their birth family. They can visit, but they can’t stay. Daily life for Hijras is about having the resourcefulness to not only be happy but also be respected. With her moral authority, Lakshmi Ma guides her family to find strength and live with a pure heart. That strong moral compass is what drives them all, and it’s what carries the film. By knowing the history of the Hijras in Indian tradition and finding strength of spirit, following them through their daily life means seeing dignity and humanity on the screen – and a bond within a community whose force can only leave the viewer in awe.
