Heavy Mental

Directed by: Sebastian Buttny
Poland | 99 minutes

A struggling actor gets an opportunity to change his fortunes through an immoral deal with a dodgy care worker.

‘Heavy Mental’ tells the story of Mariusz, a kind-hearted man with an irrevocable passion for acting and ‘Zen in the Art of Archery’. An unemployed actor who suffers with stage fright of the mind, Mariusz is unable to remember or deliver his lines in front of an audience. After his Grandfather’s death, Mariusz befriends Piotr, a gothic care-worker who, through an odd twist of fate, offers Mariusz a “tragicomic” role in his own life.

In return for his Grandfather’s flat, Mariusz agrees to pick up a girl named Ina, and then later trade her to Piotr for the property. Immoral in its concept, the outcome proves something far more complex, as each of these three people are forced to delve into their own hopes, dreams and fears in order to find out who they truly are and what they are meant to be.

Honest, funny and at times oddly moving, ‘Heavy Mental’ is a truthful and frank portrayal of life and the different moments we may come to experience in it.
