Eileen Hofer brings us this poignant insight into Cuban dancers striving to emulate the success of former prima ballerina Alicia Alonso. We follow young Amanda, whose family sacrificed everything for her, as she determinedly trains for her exams with the hope of one day auditioning for the Cuban National Ballet School. At this prestigious school, Viengsay Valdez is a rising star, but that doesn't stop the school's steely artistic director, the one and only Alicia, from giving harsh criticism, for she knows more than most the importance of passion, persistence and perfection. You'd never guess that this frail old lady was partially blind at the prime of her career. "I danced in my mind," she says in a clip from This Is Your Life, using other senses to navigate the stage. She doesn't think twice before chastising Viengsay for not showing enough passion in her performance, whilst Amanda shyly watches from the sidelines after physiotherapy. Her desire for what Viengsay has no doubt matches that of Alicia's desire to be free to move once more; she still carries her ballet shoes in her handbag and resolutely insists, despite constant support from staff, that she can stand on her own two feet.
