Hotel Dallas opens on a tour of American idyll Southfork Rach, the setting of the hugely popular ‘80s series Dallas. Over the images of the ranch tour is imposed an Eastern European song: the first in a series of pointed contradictions and connections that are portrayed and explored in this surreal docudrama about how Dallas influenced the lives of both ordinary Romanians and, perhaps, the country’s entire society and politics as it tumbled towards freedom from the autocratic Ceausescu regime in 1989. Some of the characters we meet include Ilie, a crooked businessman who built a replica of the show’s mansion as a monument to Dallas (and, perhaps, himself) and his daughter Livia, a fictionalised version of the film’s co-director Livia Ungur, who films strange recreations of the American TV show punctuated by scenes from Romanian history. Writer / producer / directors Sherng-Lee Huang and Livia Ungur don’t shy away from the bizarre and dream-like in this multi-faceted film, freely mixing narration, interview, re-enactment and fiction, refusing to hold the viewer’s hand as the intertwined narrative unfolds. The film is Ungur’s debut feature and was a hit at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year, hinting at a promising career for the young Romanian filmmaker.
