The National Hockey League of North America has faced growing condemnation of the brawling that has come with the sport since its early origins. With rules that include ‘no biting’ and ‘no eye-gouging’, it would be reasonable to suggest that hockey has its fair share of conflict. However the polls suggest that 98% of NHL players want the fighting to continue. Fans insist it’s all a part of the game. With that comes the unofficial role of the ‘enforcer’, a player who responds aggressively to dirty play in the game by fighting or intimidating the opposing team’s offending player. Suicide and addiction has recently marred the role of the enforcer, with the deaths of a few self-destructive players criticised as occupational hazard. Others disagree with making the link between personal demons and profession. Filmmaker Adam Scorgie sets out to examine the role from the mouths of the enforcers themselves, who work tirelessly to fulfill a life’s dream of playing and staying in the NHL. Featuring interviews with former and current enforcers, experts and fans, this is an insightful film that invites debate beyond its credits.
