Inspired by four of William Shakespeare’s classic texts, ‘If It Be Love’ merges together portraits of love. The love that is explored contrasts and varies, including the infatuation of Antony and Cleopatra, Hamlet’s rejection of Ophelia, his lady’s manipulation of Macbeth, and Othello’s jealousy. Mixing the old and the new, the film focuses on timeliness, much like Shakespeare’s words. There is no confinement to a specific period of history with the film split into four chapters that vary in tone, though the script keeps to Shakespearian English, an ode to his original writings. Shakespeare’s words are often described as everlasting; the film takes his original meanings to create a fresh interpretation. Moving away from the norms of repetition, it creates a piece of work that is both familiar and new to audiences, still cherishing much-loved characters all while presenting them in a new light. With performances by Alice Bird and Vinta Morgan, who play all the roles between them, ‘If It Be Love’ experiences life, love and death, as the actors perfectly capture their characters. Bird’s haunting perception of both Hamlet and Ophelia is uncanny while Morgan’s Othello captures his insane jealousy.
