Polish-German writer-director Piotr J. Lewandowski directs this visually stunning drama whose cinematography and soundtrack help paint the most beautiful depiction of love in pained circumstances. André Hennicke is truly convincing in his portrayal of the pained, skin-cancer riddled Burghardt, whose bitterness at the parasite taking his life has sucked any remaining spirit from him. What starts out as a seemingly run-of-the-mill broken-family story soon flourishes into a love story, with Burghardt’s handsome son Jonathan (Jannis Niewöhner) finding sexual release with pretty nurse Anka (Julia Koschit). The mood darkens and sparks with the arrival of Jonathan’s aunt’s ex-lover Ron. What follows is a satisfyingly tense exploration of Burghardt's secret burden: what happened to his wife as a consequence of his love affair with Ron. The truth scars Jonathan: is his father the man he thought he was? Could his mother’s death have been prevented? Blinded by anger, he risks alienating the people who should be closest to him and missing his father’s last moments.
