A young Carlos Henrique dreamt only of being a football superstar. He saw this as a means of escaping a difficult childhood and life of poverty, and he wasn’t going to let a lack of footballing skill get in the way. In his own words this is the story of an “anti-footballer”, who never sought glory on the pitch but simply wanted to bask in the lifestyle it provided. Our anti-hero is the ‘Kaiser’ - a character created and inhabited by Henrique, who was a beloved teammate, con-man, and womanizer. A man whose charm and self-delusion forged a footballing fairy-tale that drove him to national fame in 80s Brazil - without ever playing a minute of football. Through an excellently curated series of interviews with Henrique himself, close friends, and Brazilian football royalty, British filmmaker Louis Myles explores how this incredible dream became a reality. Along the way we encounter a present-day Henrique coming to terms with his life of deception and recent tragedies, as well as the fascinatingly dysfunctional world that so willingly accepted him. All of which is held within a tale that is captivating, funny, sad and at times outright bizarre from first to last. Joe Løvstrøm
