Noah and Katrina meet in a dark bar where Noah is performing as an acoustic musician. He’s instantly drawn to Kat’s mysterious allure, and in a moment of complete spontaneity the two escape the dirt of London for vibrant Tobago. 3 years later their romance has dwindled and their relationship is under strain. They travel back to the place they fell in love to mend their broken bond, but paradise soon turns into a hell-hole when they find themselves stuck in each other’s company. Learning to Breathe is a character-driven drama which explores the highs and lows of relationships and their downfalls. In Dan Turner’s fourth feature film, he playfully guides a dual narrative to create heart-wrenching and highly relatable moments of dramatic tragedy as we see the hopeful beginnings and disastrous ends of his protagonists’ romance played out on screen. Sam Hazeldine and Natalia Warner deserve particular praise for their emotive performances as the lead characters Noah and Katrina, portraying the struggles we have all experienced with such sensitivity and rawness. This is a film which is entirely absorbing, but also encourages a good amount of romantic self-reflection.
