Jazz musician Bura, a 35-year-old trumpet player, and his pregnant girlfriend Jana are getting married. The wedding is a union not just of two people, but of two very different families who come together in a whirlwind of subtle – and not so subtle – clashes and confrontations. Bura’s family insist on paying for the wedding; his father Zdravko owns a successful butcher’s. It seems like the perfect start for the newlywed couple, but when Bura’s mother discovers that €40,000 is missing from the company, the seed of suspicion is planted. As the story goes on, it turns out that the two families may be more connected than they thought and tensions simmer as long-buried hatchets come to the surface. Despite the serious subject matter, Antonio Nuić’s third feature film manages to keep the tone light, bright and heartfelt. It’s a tack away from Nuić’s previous film, Donkey, a dark and intense family drama set in rural Herzegovina. Instead, in Life Is A Trumpet, presents the city of Zagreb in an urban, modern and lively atmosphere, supported by a feel-good soundtrack that’s perfect for this Christmas-themed film.
