Arthur is a Welsh student from a working-class family, eking out an existence on a student loan and maintenance grant in London. Vida is a cellist and decidedly upper-middle class. When the two meet on a night out, their fates entwine: it’s all-consuming love at first sight. But as adorable as it is to watch the pair fall for each other, danger lurks ahead: in this modern retelling of a Shakespeare classic, the families are as entrenched in opposing views as the Capulets and Montagues, and tragedy may be unavoidable. Written by Ate de Jong (Deadly Virtues, Drop Dead Fred) and directed by de Jong and Emily Harris (Borges and I, Paragraph), Love is Thicker than Water manages to be heart-warming and tragic, emotional and thought-provoking. Special praise must go to the casting and performers: Lydia Wilson and Johnny Flynn are totally believable as the hapless lovers and are backed up by a strong cast of supporting characters, including Ellie Kendrick and Juliet Stevenson. The film also boasts some beautiful animated intervals and a wonderful folksy soundtrack that compliment the whimsical and romantic atmosphere perfectly. Orestes Kouzof
