Mexican director Jesus Magana Vazquez returns to Raindance Film Festival for a second time, having won Best International Feature with Alice in Marialand in 2015. Inspired by the short story El Alien Agropecuario by writer Carlos Velazquez, Me and the Alien is a playful and gutsy film which doesn’t shy away from taboo, but rather actively seeks it. Punk band ‘Da Feels’ are going nowhere. Desperate to get ahead, they start looking for a new direction, but hiring a keyboard player with Down’s Syndrome wasn’t exactly what they had in mind. With the ‘Alien’ on board this unknown band skyrocket into fame but, as their success grows, so too do their egos and their precious friendships are put in jeopardy. The refreshing thing about this film is that its complexity goes beyond its main character’s disability, with experimentation in narration, direct-to-camera and even a rooftop dance number creating a tantalizingly quirky aesthetic. Paco de la Fuente’s Pepe is witty and charming, rightfully taking centre stage. A touching and humorous look at individuality and difference, Me and the Alien is a feel-good comedy which wills you to leave your ego at the door.
