While driving back from a party on New Year’s Eve, Lindsey and Jeff Pittman accidently hit a passer-by. Fearing the consequences, they put him in the back seat of their car and return home. But the couple soon realises all is not as it seems and it’s not long before danger knocks on their door.
Over the next two days, they will become entangled in a life-threatening web of lies and deceit. Trapped with them is Lindsey’s rogue, ex-delinquent sister Hannah, who mysteriously ran away from her life in New York City.
Set against the eerie backdrop of wintry New England, The Midnighters is a burst of suspense that is full of unexpected twists and turns. What truly sets this psychological thriller apart is the tension at the heart of the protagonists’ relationship. While Jeff is a failed athlete, now jobless, Lindsey works hard to keep the couple afloat. Hannah, leeching off her older sister, has deep secrets of her own. This central tension, along with the mistrust and greed that it breeds, drives the storyline further than any physical external threat, to reinforce that what can bring us down often comes from within.
