Paul has just lost his job, so he finds himself a new project: he’ll start running. As chance would have it, he bumps into the same man several times, so they get acquainted and become friends. It seems that John genuinely likes Paul and, since Paul has a lot of spare time on his hands, what’s the harm in meeting new people? The ubiquitous John is at every corner, and his nearly constant physical presence is only surpassed by the growing influence he has on Paul’s mind. Paul is at a turning point in his life, both professionally and personally; he and his girlfriend have been thinking about having a baby. John tries to help, and pushes Paul in what seems to be the right direction – but for who ? John brings a highly effective growing unease to this intriguing character-based drama, and the cast do a fantastic job of dissipating this throughout the film : his seeming kindness is never far from also seeming creepy and unhinged. The actors’ performance is matched by the score, which deftly conveys all that remains unspoken and sets the perfect mood for this twisted tale.
