It's hard not to laugh when mild-mannered IT worker Philippe Mars, in a wonderfully restrained performance by François Damiens, tells the apparition of his dead parents that he's "just a bit overwhelmed". Stifled by his droll existence and swamped by the curious cast of difficult characters that populate the world around him - be it his prickly overachiever daughter, newly vegetarian son, self-involved artist sister, TV presenter ex-wife, or neighbour who is mentally stuck in the 1970s - Phillipe's life is thrown from its steady, stale orbit when it's gatecrashed by a Manic Pixie Nightmare Houseguest in the form of unhinged colleague Jérôme. Director Dominik Moll and long-term co-writer Gilles Marchand prove they have a knack for dark comedy with a sharp-as-a-tack script oozing with deadpan humour, charm and surrealist imagery. An offbeat mid-life crisis comedy with a manic-bromance twist, News From Planet Mars owes much of its success to its stellar cast, who deliver faultless performances from a bizarre and eccentric script that in the hands of other actors might easily slip into the realm of farce.
