Balance is central to Yoga, not only literally but between the mental and the physical, and effort and relaxation. Heitor Dhalia’s serene documentary follows acclaimed photographer Michael O’Neill in understanding the philosophy and spirituality of Yoga. A deeply humanist and positive portrait emerges, that demonstrates people’s capacity for self-satisfaction. For if you can manipulate your own body and mind, free from the exterior world’s trappings, you can also construct your own peace. In several aspects, On Yoga is a beautiful documentary. The crisp cinematography showcases such gorgeous landscapes, while softly gliding over phenomenal poses. Both O’Neill and Dhalia’s photogenic eye captures the sheer tranquillity of these Gurus’ being. These teachers are framed so wonderfully, their unique faces carrying immense character, their deep wrinkles appearing like gnarled trees. Accompanying their eloquent explanations is such warmth and kindness, that their inner-peace seems so clear. “Nobody knows who they are”, one Guru explains, “They confuse themselves with a photo of themselves”. The physical appearance of Yoga, like of people, is only one aspect of it. Peace is not a still pose, but a continual search. But On Yoga explains it is the journey, not the destination, which is most important. Bruno Savill De Jong
