When teens Martin and Jean-Sé target “fat” Stefie for the use of his cellphone, an unlikely friendship forms. As their pranks get more and more risky and distasteful, Stefie grows in confidence but tensions rise over loyalties between gang members. With pretty Lea showing an interest in Stefie, will he get the girl or will loneliness beckon once again? Quebecois short filmmaker Vincent Biron brings us a sensitive insight into the cruelty of coming-of-age in this sobering low-key analysis of friendships and sexual desires. Stefie's personal journey feels truthful and brave; we get why he finds his new friends addictive and admire his strengths, while snippets inside the troubled lives of those who are the targets of the pranks ground us in the reality of the gang's childish games. As the feature reaches its heart-stopping climax, will Stefie come to realise this too? Prank is a triumphantly uncomfortable exploration of peer pressure. Biron refreshingly avoids clichéd plot developments and, as a result, Prank is a subtle portrayal of the intensity of teen friendships – subtle enough for us not to expect the twist at the end.
