Asher is a likeable but wayward seventeen-year-old living in Herzliya, a town north of Tel Aviv in Israel. Although he’s bright and could do well at school, Asher is beset by impulsivity, a bit of a temper and parents who discourage his academic achievement in favour of the practical skills of taking over the family’s scaffolding business. Into his life, however, comes Rami, a literature teacher with a knack for inspiration who could prove to be the anchor point around which Asher can pivot the direction of his life. Tragedy awaits, however: Rami and Asher can’t count on each other forever and Asher may have to face the trials of adulthood sooner than expected. Scaffolding is an assured and accomplished first feature film from Israeli filmmaker Matan Yair. Having won the Best Israeli Film award and recently screened at the Toronto International Film Festival to glowing reviews from industry and audience alike, it promises to make a splash with its UK premiere at the Raindance Film Festival.
