Seto and Utsumi are two unlikely high school friends – a quiet geek and an outgoing, sporty kid - who hang out by a river in the middle of a city and chat about anything that comes to mind: school, girls, potatoes, people walking by. The pair are rarely shown away from their riverside perch and through these talks, and a few arguments, they try to come to grips with the world around them and their place in it, mulling over the myriad trials, puzzles and odd facts of life. Veteran filmmaker Tatsushi Ohmori helms this adaptation of a homonymous Japanese manga series with skill and flair: this is confinement filmmaking taken outdoors, the situation and dialogue reminiscent of a Beckett play but without the post-apocalyptic landscape. We’re immersed in the two teens’ world from the very first few moments, and the conversations and pace flow with ease, brilliantly captured by the camera and stocked with amusing cutaways to help give some backstory and set the light-hearted, quietly humorous tone. Special mention must go to lead actors Sosuke Ikematsu (Utsumi) and Masaki Suda (Seto), as well as to the film’s music composer Masahiro Hiramoto, who strikes a perfect note with his upbeat soundtrack.
