Tahir, an illegal immigrant from Lagos, has just been released from prison with nowhere to live while Hannah has lived on the streets of New York since losing her husband. Hannah, a heroin addict, considers committing suicide until she is stopped by Tahir. As the two begin to depend on each other to escape certain situations, they fall in love, with Hannah giving Tahir the courage to move on from his past crimes and Tahir giving Hannah the strength to face her real life. As they walk through the glum and grey streets of New York, they debate the existence of God (Tahir is a devout Muslim) and drugs (Hannah believes but Tahir doesn’t), building on their connection. They begin to squat in an apartment left unguarded during the summer, putting on the owner’s finest clothing, cracking open their wine and helping themselves to food. Paul Bettany’s first time as a writer and director sees stunning performances by Bettany’s wife, Jennifer Connelly as Hannah and Anthony Mackie as Tahir. ‘Shelter’ sees New York transformed into various hues of murky grey, to romanticise this story about how two people can provide support, even in the worst of times.
