What is the ‘American Dream’? We all learned about it when we were young – a life of employment, plenty and happiness in sunny USA – but how has that dream held up to repeated recessions and depressions, international war and, er, Trump? Opening with interviews with American and Mexican citizens trying to answer the question ‘What is the American Dream?’, Siblings immediately goes to the contradictions and gaps in perspective inherent in such a wide-spread fallacy: some still chase it, some rejoice at finding it, and others just want to escape it.
Diving in to its subject matter, the film focusses on two parties: Vanessa, a single mother and Trump supporter living in California, and Chuy and Chato, two brothers who live in Mexico after their mother fled to the USA in the hope of finding her own dream. You might think that you know where this is going, but director Laura Plancarte skilfully avoids cliché and shows the layered nuances of each person’s position, and the roads that brought them to where they are today.
