Director Brian McGuire returns to the Raindance Film Festival, having shown numerous features over the past few years. His latest film Sick of It All is based on the adored French children’s book The Little Prince, and explores the struggles of adult life and a yearning for childlike freedom. Insurance salesman Antony spends his days arguing with his partner, Rose, and unsuccessfully cold-calling people from his kitchen table. His real passion is vintage toys, of which he is an avid collector, but Rose cannot see their value. When his flustered brother and young nephew ‘L.P.’ turn up on his doorstep, Antony’s efforts to maintain an orderly life are thrown into chaos. A highly stylised black-and-white Film Noir, this dark comedy paints the struggles of adulthood in vivid colour. Sick of It All has all the signs of this classic genre, with its strange camera angles, shadowy mood and prevalence of fedoras and cigarettes, but this is offset with contemporary flashes to create comedic uncertainty. Jarring audience expectations, Sick of It All is a strange story of broken relationships and unsatisfied individuals.
