“The face is the work instrument to an artist” cites Masha, a potent mix of fragility and foolishness. Desperate to be a star but lacking in talent, Masha obsesses over her body. Ears, lips, chest, legs: Masha ticks her way through a series of plastic surgeries to achieve her stardom with equally comic and tragic outcomes. Enter lonely Kostya who quietly falls for Masha’s loveable, carefree attitude. In a particularly memorable scene, their date is comprised of robbing a shop and marching down the street hugging random strangers. As they court, Kostya’s narcissistic stepmother, Rita, is expelled from her home and is diagnosed with a terminal illness. Unlikely friendships form between all three as they hopelessly drift through life whilst vividly clinging onto different forms of stardom. We inhabit a world in which top industry figures only laugh and stare. As Masha transforms, she turns ugly, as Rita deteriorates, she blossoms. ‘Star’ not only explores the layers of film performance, but also the performances we conduct in everyday life: the facades that we put on as humans.
