Like London, and perhaps even more so, New York is a city who has a dependent, love/hate relationship with its public transport system, and particularly its subway. Love it or hate it, most people use it and it’s probably true that all of life can be found in a single New York subway car. This is the central premise behind Michael Berry’s second feature film (and first musical), Stuck, which sees us join six New Yorkers trapped in a train carriage deep underground. Understandably silent at first (following the unspoken rule that nobody talks to each other in big cities), the small crowd eventually start conversing, connecting, singing: swapping stories, opinions, insights and secrets in a way that would normally be unthinkable for newly-acquainted strangers. Here is a slice of contemporary America, a character study not just of six individuals but of a whole nation, told through song. The music is original, catchy and emotional, a true achievement for newcomers to feature film composition Ben Maughan, Riley Thomas and Tim Young. If you’re looking for feel-good movie magic, this is it. Orestes Kouzof
