The Joneses tells the story of yet another family names ‘Jones’ – in many ways as usual as any, in others unique in the world. Jheri Jones (formerly Jerry) is a 74-year-old transgender divorcee. After the death of his ex-wife, she moves in with her estranged two adult sons, Trevor and Brad, both of whom are strange and damaged in their own ways. The two men are trying to find love and facing obstacles: Brad is brain damaged, and Trevor is severely insecure. At the same time, their unconventional matriarch searches for a life partner of her own – easier said than done for a transgender woman on the wrong side of 70, living in a trailer park in deepest, darkest bible belt country. The Joneses is the debut documentary feature for director Moby Longinotto and showcases a careful, incisive and sentimental eye from this new talent. The Joneses premiered at the San Francisco International Film Festival in April this year, where it also was nominated for the Best Documentary Feature award. Orestes Kouzof
