Somewhere in Ger(wo)many, the Female Liberation Army prepares to overthrow the patriarchy and usher in a new female world order. How? A new sort of lesbian porn that functions as propaganda for the female revolution. However, when Isolde, a self-proclaimed “separatist among separatists”, is caught harbouring a young injured man in the basement of the feminist headquarters – posed as a school for troubled women – secrets are revealed that question the very nature of womanhood.
Within every stunning scene, the stylized aesthetic of LaBruce is evident. Each face is striking, whether through intense makeup, haircuts, or facial features. And from the short olive skirts and burgundy cardigans of the school uniforms, to the terracotta roof and turquoise shutters of the convent, the film offers a distinctive exploration of colour.
Camp, high-fantasy, and unapologetically queer, The Misandrists transforms a feminist paradise into a visceral critique of essentialist views on gender and sexuality.
