Inti Carrizo-Ortiz's debut feature depicts the apocalypse on a shoestring on the streets of Chile. When an unnatural blackness descends one night and doesn't relent, the population of Santiago find themselves driven by their darkest impulses. Gabriel (Carlos Talamilla) and Carmen (Carmen Disa Gutierrez) try to fight the violent oppressions that the blackness brings, but find it may be better to drift over to the dark side. This tense, apocalyptic psychological thriller works both as an inventive take on the zombie film, and as a strident metaphor for Chilean history and the collapse of social order under the pressures of a totalitarian regime. Reminiscent of Chris Gorak's claustrophobic dirty bomb thriller RIGHT AT YOUR DOOR, Carrizo-Ortiz's film asks all manner of difficult questions. The seductive allure of power and violence forces the idealistic young students at the heart of the film to lose faith in the morality they grew up with. As Santiago is plunged into unending night, so Chile collapses into chaotic unrest and social disorder, the antidote to which appears to be a measure of martial law and authoritarian governance.
