As a woman, your identity changes as you age. And if you're lucky, the girlish prettiness that society associates with femininity transforms over time into something better: wisdom. It's this quality that the four mature transgender women in this documentary possess quietly and poignantly. The title comes from the wise words of Amy, who likens human beings to oysters with a pearl of true self within their hard, flinty exterior. The people featured here are at different stages of finding their 'pearl', whether living as a woman 24/7 or dressing as their alter-egos in small, furtive moments. It's not easy coming out in a post-industrial town, and their journeys are challenging, especially where existing marriages are concerned. Shot in a verité style that shows its subjects from every angle, it is at times an overwhelmingly intimate portrait. But when you consider what these women have been through to be able to tell their story, the closeness of the camera makes sense; after living in the shadows, there is hope in this bear-all storytelling.
