Magda, a sensible author and anthropologist, is kidnapped with her colleague Michael by a pagan cult after a night out. She wakes up to find herself locked in a dim, dirty dungeon and discovers carvings all over her cell walls that indicate that it’s been used as a secret prison for decades. Soon, the visits begin: first from a young girl who gives Magda food and drink, then by more sinister characters: cult leaders who inform her of Michael’s death – “dismembered by the sacrificial method” – and torture her. Using her background as an anthropologist, Magda tries to coax information out of her captors, slowly revealing more and more about the dark cult. She begins to befriend the young girl who visits her, but real escape is as elusive as the dreams of freedom that visit her every night. Although violent and bloody in all the right places, The Power also excels at instilling dreads through its dialogue – particularly in a scene when the young girl describes what the cult did to her twin sister as part of an initiation ceremony. Veteran writer / director / producer Paul Hills spins a tense and gruesome horror.
