Following the suicide of three employees within a single branch of a large multinational company, high-flying executive Sofía Cuevas, played with pitch-perfect edginess by Maribel Verdú (Y Tu Mamá También, Pan's Labyrinth), is tasked with conducting an internal investigation as quickly and quietly as possible to avoid a PR fiasco. From her conversations with colleagues of the dead employees, it becomes apparent to Sofía that although each of the deceased had their demons, the insidious management practices that permeate the branch's culture undoubtedly had a considerable role to play. A sleek and stylish thriller, the film plays its cards close to its chest, never allowing the viewer to know more than Sofia does as we follow her through an investigation in which her own moral compass is tested. The winding glass and steel labyrinth of the office tower is as uninviting and devoid of warmth as the brutal capitalist agenda on which the unnamed company runs. With clear parallels to a 2009 incident which saw ten employees at a French company commit suicide, The Tip of the Iceberg chillingly reflects the horrors of the modern corporate machine which strips workers of their quality of life in the quest for increased profits and happy shareholders.
