Focusing on the experiences of the inhabitants of Greek city Kastoria, this documentary brings to screen the rarely told story of the Sephardic Jews that thrived in Greece until war decimated their community. Invaded by the Nazis, having lived in peaceful unity with Christians for over 2000 years, their abduction from their homes left the town bereft. Making use of previously unseen archive material and poignant interviews with survivors of the concentration camps and inhabitants of Kastoria, this film is an informative and personal piece. While ‘Treasures’ is an important celebration of the culture of one small town, it nevertheless gives insight into Greece’s wider experiences of World War II as well as the significance of community. With the film’s original title taking its name from the Judaeo-Spanish ‘Trezoros Perdidos’, meaning ‘Lost Treasures’, this is an intimate film which serves as much as a grieving for the senseless and brutal loss of a harmonious and diverse community, as it is an enlightening look at the lesser-heard victims of the Second World War.
