Gloria is a boisterous old woman: she doesn’t have her tongue in her pocket and will let you know what she thinks, whether you like it or not. Also, Gloria used to be Butch. After Butch’s marriage imploded in a nasty divorce, he went into hiding as woman. Realising his content in his disguise, Butch made the decision to live his happiest life which meant letting go of revenge impulses against her old life and living as Gloria. Gloria is a force of nature. Her loud mouth and her relentlessness make her ready for whatever life throws her way, and what a life it is. Between trying to forge her new identity, falling in love with a trans man and reconnecting with people from a past that refuses to stay where it belongs, there’s never a dull moment when following Gloria. This documentary is just like its titular character: rambunctious, with a narrative that’s full of surprising twists and as colourful as the cars Gloria loves, or as the South Florida setting. There’s never a dull moment with this character; she could have been broken at every turn, yet powers through and gleefully enjoys the ride.
