Partly funded by the Bulgarian National Film Centre, Voevoda sets out to bring recognition to the lesser-known female Robin Hoods of the 19th century.
Voevoda - the term given to female leaders of rebel gangs - charts the life of Roumena, a feisty young tomboy, as she navigates life in a men’s world. Despite becoming a wife and mother, she makes a choice to join the rebel cause in the footsteps of her father - and pays the consequences. Joined by her childhood nemesis as her banner man, Roumena fights alongside her blood brothers with fearless determination. However, the group begin to disband after a night of reckless passion leads to an unwanted pregnancy. Steadfast in her loyalty, Roumena gives up her second child and seeks her goal of becoming ally to her father’s former gang, but admiration from her blood-brother lover severs her chances and leads to a deadly conclusion.
Popgantcheva puts in stunning performances throughout as the strong and selfless Roumena alongside a convincing cast of fresh talent; a result of heavy training, meticulous research and a dedication to providing a realistic historical portrayal which avoids cliché. The result is a breathtakingly atmospheric drama celebrating female heroism.
