‘We Will Be the World Champions’ tells the uplifting story of how a group of young and ambitious Yugoslavians lead their country to victory in the world of basketball. This historical drama moves between the 1940’s and 1970’s where those who founded the team watch with delight as their successors play for gold in Ljubljana. We see scenes from past and present and are taken on a journey filled with humour and sorrow as the team strive to be world champions. The film gives us an interesting insight into the political climate of post war Yugoslavia. The decades are beautifully captured and credit must go to Dragica Laušević, Jelena Sopic and Milan Tvrdisic for the brilliant costumes, art direction and cinematography. The script for ‘We Will Be the World Champions’ is witty and heart-warming and captures the warmth shared between friends and comrades. The protagonist is Nebojsa Popovic who is brilliantly played by Strahinja Blazic. His character is full of enthusiasm, hunger and ambition. The tale is a true testament to friendship and belief and ensures that those who fought so hard for their dreams are recognised in history.
