“This is not my story, it’s their story”, the world-renowned animal trainer Andrew Simpson narrates over the shy, tiny wolf puppies which were just shipped to him in wooden boxes. For them, humans are the strange and dangerous animal and Andrew oversees them with great compassion and a profound understanding. Perhaps he feels similar to them, working alongside them on landscapes of the Inner Mongolian grasslands, where none of them speak the language. Together he and the wolves work behind-the-scenes for three years on the 2015 Chinese film WOLF TOTEM. We accompany Andrew as these small pups mature into fully grown fierce predators, although they maintain a playful and loyal familiarity to their adopted owner. To the untrained eye, both the natural rituals of the wolfpack and the manufactured techniques of blockbuster filmmaking can seem strange and alienating. WOLVES UNLEASHED allows a gentle and unrestrained look into both realms, providing detailed explanation of high-budget filmmaking, and an intimate examination of the wolfpack’s dynamic. Facing numerous obstacles and countless challenges, Andrew and the wolves form a tight bond, which leads to both amazing cinema, and a deep emotional journey. Bruno Savill de Jong
