Eerie and disorientating, “Worm” asks the question – how far should science be allowed to roam? In her unassuming basement lab, Ana, a PhD student at Oxford University, makes an astounding discovery that will shake the world. The power of her experiment is likened to the invention of electricity – it’s a big one. A crowning moment for any scientist’s life…so she dives into it. And things get messy. Forbidding machinery that looms over its test subjects, dazed scenes of memory loss, peculiar animal masks and governmental interrogations all add up to produce a disturbing but highly captivating film. The science, tension and romance all swirl tightly around a central core that begs one of humanity’s enduring conundrums: what makes us ‘us’ – are we more than just biological matter? Yaiza Figueroa’s Ana is intelligent and daring, leading the way in this new frontier of scientific development. But she isn’t a one-sided Superwoman. A major strength of this film is the balancing act Figueroa commands between Ana’s assuredness and her heart-breaking loneliness and fear. It’s a film that brings heart and soul to clean sci-fi.
