Emanuele Crialese, born in 1965, is a Roman film director of Sicilian origins. After a number of short films he made his feature film debut in 1997 with Once We Were Strangers. Emanuele then decided to return to his homeland and enjoyed international success with his first Italian work, Respiro. In 2006, he directed his next film Nuovomondo (aka The Golden Door). Nuovomondo was presented at the 63rd International Venice Film Festival where it won the Silver Lion.
